Historical Foundations
Tea was first introduced to Kenya by British colonists in the early 20th century, with the first commercial plantings in Limuru around 1903. The Kenya Tea Development Authority (KTDA), established in 1964, transformed the industry by organizing smallholder farmers into cooperatives that could access markets, technical support, and shared processing facilities.
The Rise of Smallholder Farming
Today, over 600,000 smallholder farmers produce approximately 60% of Kenya’s tea. The KTDA model has been remarkably successful, providing farmers with guaranteed market access, input supplies, and technical training. This cooperative structure has made Kenyan tea farming among the most equitable in the world.
Challenges Facing the Industry
Despite its success, the Kenyan tea industry faces significant challenges: climate change is altering growing patterns and reducing yields in some regions; the global oversupply of tea is putting downward pressure on prices; rising production costs, especially labor and energy, are squeezing margins; and the need for value addition to capture more of the retail price.
